Film Club: Yojimbo (Kurosawa, 1961)

Toshiro Mifune as Yojimbo
November is Yojimbo month here at AkiraKurosawa.info as our film club turns its attention to this 1961 classic from Kurosawa as part of our progression through his samurai films.

For a proper, or at least lengthier introduction to the film, please check out the brand new Yojimbo page at the Kurosawa filmography section.

Yojimbo is one of Kurosawa’s most popular films and we too have naturally discussed it on many occasions. Most of that discussion can be found behind the discussion forum’s Yojimbo tag. The most recent topic, from a month ago, centred on Sturgill Simpson’s recent album and film and could be an interesting one to revisit, if you are a Netflix subscriber.

As for the film’s availability on home video, it’s globally pretty excellent. For more information, take a look at the DVD and blu-ray sections of this website. As usual, also check out your streaming services.

Next month, we will continue the film club with Sanjuro, Kurosawa’s sequel to Yojimbo.

What’s your opinion of Yojimbo? Which of its many remakes and reappropriations is your favourite?
