40 years ago today: Dersu Uzala wins at the Moscow International Film Festival

Moscow International Film Festival
The 9th Moscow International Film Festival concluded on the 23rd of July, 1975, with Akira Kurosawa‘s Soviet produced Dersu Uzala taking home the coveted Golden Prize, an honour it shared with the Polish film The Promised Land by Andrzej Wajda and Ettore Scola’s Italian film We All Loved Each Other So Much.

The festival was the first time that Dersu Uzala had been shown publicly, with the post-production having been completed in June. The film’s Japanese premiere would follow on August 2.

In addition to being awarded the festival’s main prize, Dersu Uzala also received the Prix FIPRESCI, an award given by the International Federation of Film Critics, an association founded in Belgium that gives out the award as part of international film festivals.
