The Magnificent Seven remake gets a rewriter, Tom Cruise no longer attached

The Magnificent SevenSeveral online news sources report that the in-development remake of The Magnificent Seven, last reported here in April 2012, will have John Lee Hancock rewriting the script, while Tom Cruise is no longer attached to the project.

Hancock’s latest film, Saving Mr Banks, was both written and directed by him and is currently generating a healthy doze of awards buzz. Hancock is no stranger to the western genre either, having co-written and directed the 2004 film The Alamo. It is unclear whether Hancock will start from scratch, or build upon the work done by The Magnificent Seven remake’s original screenwriter, Nic Pizzolatto.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise appears to no longer be attached to the project.

The original 1960 The Magnificent Seven was, of course, based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. No release date is yet available for the new remake of the remake.
