The Last Princess theme song announced

Famed Japanese rocker Tomoyasu Hotei, RnB singer Kreva and bassist Seiji Kameda (of the band Tokyo Jihen) have been announced as working on the theme song for Shinji Higuchi’s remake of Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress, retitled The Last Princess in English.

The trio, who work under the moniker “The Three”, will release the song as a single on May 7, three days before the theatrical release of the film in Japan.

Hotei is also reportedly working on some sort of a separate (solo?) version of the theme song. And in case the name rings a distant bell, you may well know him as the extremely tall samurai in 1998 film Samurai Fiction, which was visibly inspired by Kurosawa’s treatment of the samurai film genre. (And if you are a David Bowie fan, you may also know Hotei through his connections with Bowie and the jazz pianist Mike Garson, but that’s another story entirely.)

He also wrote the music.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film — its debt to Kurosawa was obvious (I love that there are at least three characters named after directors: Suzuki, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa!)…

It’s been ten years. I doubt Episode Two is in the wings … but I can dream.
