Samurai 7.0: a stage play

The American Beau Jest Moving Theatre have adapted Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai on the stage as Samurai 7.0. The result is described on their website as a “timeless tale of an eclectic band of spiritual warriors who come out of retirement to defeat bandits”, with the story now set not only in feudal Japan, but also in “the mythic West, and the battlefields of Europe.” It is also promoted as a contemporary theatrical experiment using music, movement, puppetry and lighting, combined with what they describe as their “own cinematic language for the stage [used]to explore the resonance of these films, our need for heroes, the power of the number seven, and the ways in which live action can evoke a celluloid world.” More information about the work can be found from this Boston Globe article.

In case you are interested and happen to be around, the show will run at the Calderwood Pavilion, Boston Center for the Arts, between June 7 and 24.
