Kurosawa's manifestoes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a bit of information: in English, I have come across references to two film manifestoes written or co-written by Kurosawa. The first is mentioned in Donald Richie’s work, where he claims Kurosawa wrote a manifesto to accompany Seven Samurai (and he translates a bit of it). The second is in reference to a manifesto for the Committee of Four Knights. Does anyone know if full translations of these manifestoes into English exist and, if so, where I might find them? Alternatively, where I might find Japanese copies of these texts? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That’s a really interesting question, Scott. I haven’t seen any full English translations, not that it has crossed my mind to look for any. Did you check the AK Digital Archive for Japanese ones?
