Those of you in Ireland may find the Irish Film Institute’s new digital film season, titled Japanese Story, interesting. Setting out to celebrate the history of Japanese film, Japanese Story Volume 1 includes Seven Samurai, as well as Ozu’s Tokyo Story, Naruse’s beautiful When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, as well as eight other classics, old and new. I wonder if the name implies that there will be more volumes.
Sadly, IFI’s service is only available in the Republic of Ireland.
Wow, thanks for pointing that out, Vili, I’d missed that offer (serves me right for letting my membership lapse).
Thats a fabulous selection of films.
Incidentally, for those with just the regular Netflix connection, if you haven’t watched it yet, I’d strongly recommend Demon Slayer (the first series, not the movie, I don’t think thats available outside Japan yet). Its the best anime series in years, its insanely entertaining. I was trying to come up with a Kurosawa connection to discuss it, but unless I’m missing something, there isn’t one.
