New Dersu DVD from Artificial Eye

    Hello there!

Anyone know anything about the new Dersu DVD coming from Artificial Eye?

I’m almost excited seeing that it should be anamorphic, but some of the pictures they show look really, uh, bad. I would hope that the pics are compressed down, and not indicative of the quality of the DVD.

    Thanks for the link, Smithcraft!

On Amazon, the new release has a different ASIN number than Artificial Eye’s original DVD, and the Artificial Eye numbering appears to be ART565DVD rather than ART344DVD, which the copy I have has. Having said that, according to Artificial Eye’s catalogue ART344DVD now refers to The Commissar by Alexader Askoldov, so I don’t know what’s going on there.

My guess is that this is just a re-release. The features are the same as with the original Artificial Eye release, and so is the cover. On Amazon the older release actually has a slightly different cover, but the copy I have has exactly the same cover as the new release.

In any case, I’ll fire an email to Artificial Eye. They should know.

    No problem Vili!

Artificial Eye’s website didn’t even list it a week or two ago. I’ve been waiting for it to pop up there since I saw it on the release calender at DVD Beaver.

How does the existing AE version compare to the two versions compared at DVD Beaver ( http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/dersuuzala.htm ) ?

Back when I did the relevant research and wrote the Dersu Uzala section of the Kurosawa DVD page, it seemed that the AE version was slightly worse than the Kino version. But none of these prints really shines.

I almost forgot about this release, and Artificial Eye never responded to my inquiries about it. However, according to this review it is a different transfer than in their earlier release.

I must say though that the screenshots that the reviewer gives for the original release look quite bad, and I’m not sure if my copy of the AE release is that bad. Confusing.
