I saw Seven Samurai there last week and am going to see Throne of Blood tomorrow.

The most notable thing about it, other than that the theater was close to being full, was that for the first time in my experience, there was a line to get into the men’s room but not the ladies’ room. There was that big a difference in attendance by gender.

When I was 23 years old, I was a university student in Japan. From July 1984 to June 1985, I had the opportunity to film Akira Kurosawa behind the scenes during the production of Ran.

I’d like to share a video that captures the true face of Kurosawa during that time — a rare look at him speaking about cinema.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Bring Akira Kurosawa Documentary “Filming Akira Kurosawa” to the Academy Awards!

My name is Mitsuhiko Kawamura, a documentary filmmaker from Japan.
I am planning to screen my film “Filming Akira Kurosawa” (the English version of “Life Work of Akira Kurosawa”) in the United States as part of an Oscar Qualifying Run to officially submit it for consideration in the Academy Awards Documentary Feature category.

The screening is scheduled for October 24, 2025, for 7 consecutive days at a theater in Santa Monica, Los Angeles.
This screening is a mandatory requirement to qualify for the Oscars and also aligns with the nationwide U.S. 40th-anniversary revival screenings of Kurosawa’s masterpiece “RAN”, making it a culturally significant event.

However, to make this happen, we need funding of JPY 1.35 million (approx. USD 8,500) plus additional publicity costs.
