There is a crowdfunding campaign going on over at camp-fire.jp (page in Japanese) to raise money for an English version of a Kurosawa documentary. From what I can gather from the Japanese campaign page, the campaign is aiming to digitalise, translate and edit some 100 hours of making-of footage that was shot during the making of Ran.

The person behind the project, Mitsuhiko Kawamura, was present during the production of Ran and created a documentary that was released in Japanese last year. According to the campaign page, the project would be released together with Anaheim University and its Akira Kurosawa School of Film. The campaign page also talks about how Kawamura has sadly been battling cancer and sees this as something of a last project.

The campaign will end on October 13 and is looking for two million yen, an equivalent of about 12,500 EUR or 14,000 USD. The release is planned for March 23, 2026.

Or that’s what I gather from the Japanese page through a translator program. If anyone can fill in more details, or knows more about this, it would be interesting to hear!
