New(ish) Magnificent Seven Trailers

Some weeks ago, The Magnificent Seven got a couple of new trailers and I forgot to post about them. There’s one for the Americans and one for the more International folk out there.

So be careful which you watch. Supposedly, watching the wrong one can get you killed or something. I don’t know why. Maybe it is so jam packed with cultural references that your head explodes. Or maybe it’s the music: after all, while every American automatically links the western film genre and hip hop, for the International people it is a far safer bet to play yet another “House of the Rising Sun” cover because that’s just the way we roll.

I don’t know. They mysteries of international film distribution are perplexing to me. And you came here for the trailers, anyway. Here they are.

Official trailer:

International trailer:

The Magnificent Seven is, of course, a remake of the original The Magnificent Seven, which in turn was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, which in turn was a cinema classic.

The Magnificent Seven will ride on September 23. Although if you will be attending the Toronto International Film Festival, you will have a chance to see the film on September 8 instead, when the film kicks off the festivities.

So, how about that music choice. Does it make you more excited about the film?

I was curious about the two different soundtracks but I can’t see them listed anywhere on imdb, so maybe they are for the trailers only. The imdb listing has a very long list of producers, along with constant reminders that this is a ‘reimagining’ rather than a ‘remake’ of M7, while it includes AK and other 7S writers in the credits. So I can’t help feeling this is a film which owes as much to marketing design and lawyers as it has it does to any creative inputs. But still, the cast looks pretty good, so I’m looking forward to it.

I can only assume that there is some marketing reason for the different soundtracks, but I can’t imagine what it is.
