No biggie, it’s just that there are certain rules that web hosting providers expect you to follow, and although I am paying for the service I still need to stick to the contract.

And yes, it’s still technically illegal to copy a film even if it’s unavailable, as long as it is under copyright. It is a different matter whether anyone would actually come after you. As for whether a film is under copyright, it’s a terribly complicated legal matter (at least for my brain), and I would just assume that most film prints are by default under copyright (which is not the case, but simplifies matters greatly).

Technical question: is it illegal to make copies of films that are out of print? If no company is selling a Dodeskaden DVD, is it still illegal to make a copy of an old one?

Hey Jeremy, thanks for the offer. Hopefully, illegal activities will not be necessary, as by the time we get to those movies I’ll be multi-regioned up, home cinema-wise.

Guys, I would rather this website didn’t turn into a trading hub for illegal DVD copies. How you get your copies is up to you, but no discussion about copying or trading should be done here publicly.

I do feel your pain, though. To the best of my knowledge, Dodesukaden currently has no English DVD release apart from the out-of-print Mei Ah release.

If you read French, there is a nice looking French release. Or, try the VHS version, if you have a VHS player.

What is Ugetsu’s deal with The Lower Depths?
I can provide a copy, and remove region coding, and convert NTSC to PAL or whatever is needed. I have access to every DVD for this film club and the equipment to do whatever is needed to them.
