Akira Kurosawa on Robert Altman’s list

It is perhaps somewhat irrelevant, but I thought I might mention it anyway. A recent Sydney Morning Herald article/interview with Robert Altman mentions that Altman admires Kurosawa’s films. The article writes: “If Altman is considered by many to be a trailblazer, he counters that he learned everything he knows from the directors he admires: Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, John Huston and Jean Renoir.” You can read the rest here

I’ve been trying to think which Kurosawa film is closest to Altman’s narrative type. And I don’t think I can actually think of any. While Altman’s films are very much actor-driven, the same probably couldn’t be said of Kurosawa’s movies.
