Donnie Yen on the state of Seven Samurai remake

Malaysia Star quotes Donnie Yen, who in a press conference yesterday confirmed that the Weinstein Company’s project for a Hollywood remake of Seven Samurai is still in its very early stages.

More specifically, what one can decipher from Yen’s responses is that an early draft of the script is ready but not yet available to the prospective actors. As for Yen himself, the project needs to mature before he commits himself to it.

To recap what we know: Harvey Weinstein is apparently wanting to put together a Hollywood remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. John Fusco is rumoured to be writing the script, while Donnie Yen has expressed his interest in the project after Weinstein asked him to appear in the film if it gets made. Also George Clooney and Zhang Ziyi have been rumoured to be part of Weinstein’s plans. It must be remembered, however, that as everything is still in its very early stages, nothing can be said for certain yet.
